Promontory 2016

Promontory 2016 from Napa Valley, California, is one of the most distinctive wines from the Harlan family's portfolio. As a new-generation estate, Promontory reflects the family's cult-wine philosophy through meticulous winemaking, tiny production, and a remarkable story rooted in an extraordinary site, making it a highly collectible wine.

Situated on the southwestern ridges of the Mayacamas Mountains, the vineyard is shaped by morning fog, cool breezes, and a diverse range of soils. This secluded and rugged terroir gives the wine its unique sense of place, delivering a style that balances power, structure, and elegance with impressive depth and character.

The 2016 vintage is widely hailed as the zenith of Promontory to date, earning perfect 100-point scores from multiple critics including Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Wine Advocate / The Wine Independent), James Suckling, and Jeb Dunnuck, along with 99 points from Antonio Galloni (Vinous). Following five years of drought, the winter of 2016 brought generous and welcome rainfall, and the growing season proved highly favorable with mild temperatures, creating a legendary vintage.

Deep garnet-purple in color, it bursts from the glass with bold scents of black cherries, blueberry pie, and licorice, leading to a slowly emerging core of crème de cassis, dark chocolate, black soil, and truffles, accented by touches of cumin seed, mossy bark, and beef drippings. The full-bodied palate is densely packed with muscular fruit, backed by a rock-solid structure of very firm, exquisitely ripe, grainy tannins and fantastic tension. The finish is both powerful and beautifully nuanced, hedonic and cerebrally gratifying, described as having a "cathedral-like structure" — majestic yet weightless, hauntingly long.

Widely regarded as a benchmark legend of Napa Valley, the 2016 requires 7 to 8 years of cellaring to reach its early drinking window and will continue to evolve gracefully for 30+ years, making it an essential milestone vintage for collectors and connoisseurs alike.
